Last 2 days in New York City

August 18, 2012

Woke up at 8a.m. The kids were still sleeping of course. I did some stuff on-line. Called TS and talked to him for a while.

I ate half a watermelon and went on a walk around Harlem. I wrote my blog about the day before. At 11a.m. I was getting restless and the kids were still sleeping. Our plan for the day was to stand in line for half price Broadway tickets. Then ride the Staten Island Ferry so the kids could see the statue of liberty and then check out China town.

I got the kids some breakfast on my way back home and woke them up at 11:30a.m. They were moving very slow and I wanted to get on with our day. If it was me alone I would have been out exploring hours ago, but I had to remind myself that this was my kids vacation too and that I needed to have patience. J

Finally we got to the subway at 1p.m. At Times Square I went to start standing in line, but there wasn’t one. Then I realized we could buy a matinee ticket for half price and skip line standing. So we decided to go see Phantom of the Opera and bought our tickets.

We made a stop at Jamba Juice on the way so we wouldn’t be hungry during the play. I got 320z. fresh squeezed oj blended with mango as usual. It took longer than expected and we had 10 minutes to find the theater and get seated. We pushed our way through the crowd while trying to chug our smoothies…lol. I was getting a little stressed but it all worked out and we made it just in time.

The play was great. I was so tired though I kept nodding off a little. I told myself for what I paid to see this play I was going to stay awake damn it! Haha.

During the play I got a little hungry so I ate about 10 dates. That actually woke me up a little and gave me a boost of energy I really needed.

The kids thought it was a great show. When it was over we took the subway down to the Ferry and saw the Statue of Liberty. It was nice being out in the water with the fresh breeze. I’ve about had it with the stench of the city.

After the Ferry ride we walked around downtown looking at the sights. We passed occupy NY, which is a very small group right now. I asked a guy sitting there if I could take a picture, he said sure and then proceeded to talk to the kids about how corrupt our country is…lol. When we finally got away from him, Savana said, “thanks mom for making us listen to that just so you could take a picture”. I thought that was funny.

Later as we were walking along there were some people doing jumping jacks. I ran over and joined in, it looked like fun and I’m always up for some extra exercise. The kids told me to knock it off or they were ditching me. Aww…spoil sports.

We got to China town just as it was getting dark and the kids loved it. I knew they would. We walked around for a while and then we all started getting hungry. All the fresh food markets were closed. We finally found a restaurant the kids wanted to eat at and looked clean enough that Shawn would go in.

I was hungry but didn’t want to eat any cooked food. I decided I would order some veggies and rice. When my order came it looked so unappealing to me. I didn’t want to eat that dead bland food, I wanted vibrant and me J. I took a few bites and felt my stomach start to cramp up so I pushed it aside and called it good.

After dinner we walked through little Italy and with it being Saturday night it was a very lively place. We were all having a great time.

Finally we decided to head back to the apartment. We took the express train and had to get off farther away from where we are staying than usual. Harlem was a very exciting place on Saturday night. There were parties going on all over the place and you could smell marijuana everywhere. Shawn was real nervous about how far we had to walk. I assured him that everything would be fine and it was. No one bothered us at all.

Back at the apartment I called TS and we talked for a while. I ate a bunch of peanuts while we were talking. I went to sleep around midnight.

August 19, 2012

Woke up at 7a.m. The kids were still sleeping of course. I didn’t feel very good from eating all those peanuts the night before. I drank a bunch of water to try and get myself hydrated again.

With it being Sunday, I wanted to find a church to go to, especially a Baptist church. With being in Harlem I knew a Baptist church would have fantastic singing and I wanted to experience that. I called TS and we talked for a while.

I went to the grocery store across the street and bought a huge watermelon. I sat outside on the apartment steps to people watch and ate almost half of the watermelon. It was too big I couldn’t fit it all in.

I had meant to write my blog but by that time it was time to start looking for a church. I walked down a couple of blocks and saw a Baptist church…bingo! I started walking up to the church and a couple people stood in front of the door. A large man politely told me that they weren’t accepting visitors today. Ouch! I kept on walking in search of another church. I came across a Catholic church but I knew they wouldn’t have the singing that I so wanted to hear. So I continued on. I finally came across another Baptist church and service was just about to start. I was hurrying up the stairs before anyone could stop me when a man asked if he could help me. I smiled real big and sweet and said that I would like to attend the church service. He smiled back and said he was sure he could find me a place to sit.

He sat me in the back and shortly after the singing started. It was just what I had in mind. I loved every minute of it. The service was 3 hours long. I was so tired I kept nodding off when things got calm, but as soon as the preaching and singing started I would perk right up. It was such a fun experience.

I got back to the apartment at 1p.m. The kids were just getting up. I told them they could go get some breakfast while I took a nap. I fell asleep instantly and slept for almost 2 hours.

When I woke up I went across the street and bought two bunches of perfectly spotted bananas. I came back to the apartment and blended those babies up and slurp them right now. Ahhh…much better J

The kids and I walked to the subway on a different route and came across a beautiful community garden. I was so happy to see that. We finished walking to the subway and  went back to Times Square.  It was almost 5p.m. by then. They ate at Subway, I was still full from my delicious smoothie. We went to the Lego store so Shawn could by his brother Scott, who couldn’t come with us a gift. Such a sweet boy!

We walked around some more and bought some souvenirs.

Then we walked down to Grand Central Station because I wanted to see it. On the way we ran into a huge market going on and bought a bunch more stuff.

After seeing Grand Central Station we walked to Whole Foods. I bought a bunch of peaches to eat for dinner. We all sat down to eat there and my peaches weren’t that good. Bummer!

There was a Jamba Juice there in the store so we got some smoothies too. I had my usual 320z. fresh squeezed oj blended with mango. I decided to blend the peaches with bananas to take on the bus trip to the fruit festival tomorrow.

We took the subway back home. Tried to take a different route walking home. We got a little lost but found our way.

Back at the apartment I told the kids to start packing. Then I ran across the street to get some more bananas. The grocery store was closed, so I went down to the little store on the next block. No bananas there, so I went to a store on the next block, no bananas either. I decided to come back and try going down the road the opposite way. On my way back there was a guy walking toward me. I nodded as I went by and he turned around and wanted to know what I was doing. I kept walking and told him I was getting bananas. He kept walking with me and wanted to know if I wanted to hang out. I told him no, that I needed to get bananas. He kept pestering me and wanted to know if he could walk with me. I told him, no that I had to hurry and my kids were waiting. Finally I got rid of him and found bananas at the next store I went too.

When I got back we cleaned up the apartment and changed the cat litter. Then we realized that the box of new litter was empty. I wasn’t about to go out again, so I decided it would be fine and I would get some in the morning.

I called TS, talked to him awhile and went to bed around midnight.
